Plain-English guides for UK small businessesLatest articles · How we write

Editorial policy

How The SME Ledger researches, sources, fact-checks, dates and updates its articles on business finance, property finance, marketing and running a business.

Sources first

Articles are built from primary and official sources wherever possible, such as GOV.UK, HMRC, Companies House, the Financial Conduct Authority and the British Business Bank. Sources are listed at the end of each article.

Facts, not guesses

We do not publish statistics, prices or quotes we cannot trace to a source. Where a figure is shown, we say where it comes from.

Dates and updates

Each article shows the date it was last updated. Rules and prices change, so articles are reviewed when the underlying information moves.

Independence

We write for readers first. Articles avoid promises about results and point readers to registered professionals and free, impartial services where that matters.

Corrections

If you spot something out of date or wrong, we want to fix it. Corrections are made as soon as they are verified, and the updated date on the article changes.
